About me

Hello and welcome to my food blog, Tortillas and Honey!

This blog follows me and my excursions in the kitchen, whether it's baking or cooking. I share some of my favorite desserts, my favorite family recipes, recipes that I'm making, and new recipes. While I love making things in the kitchen, what I enjoy even more is to share food, recipes, and ideas.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love to bake, try new recipes, and share my desserts with my friends and family. I am definitely more of a baker than a cook. I am more comfortable following a recipe to exact measurements and throwing it in the oven than preparing something on the stove. While I also love to cook, sometimes the idea of just tossing something together on the stove is just mind-boggling to me! The more I cook though, the more comfortable I am getting trying new things and getting creative in the kitchen.

The name of this blog, Tortillas and Honey, is both an homage to my grandmother and my homestate of New Mexico. I love my grandmother's home cooking and sometimes share my favorite recipes of hers here (homemade flour tortillas, grandma's famous fried potatoes, and biscochitos). We just lost my grandmother July 2015 after a serious stroke, and I am happy that this blog is a living homage to her. My grandma's recipes are also very New Mexican. You can read more about the story of my blog here. I am also very proud of New Mexico and its culture. I often try to promote my favorite things about New Mexico and what New Mexico offers-- like chile and other foods!

Some more tidbits about me: I was a picky eater growing up and didn't eat meat, but now I will try almost anything at least once. I am working full-time so oftentimes I find it hard to blog as frequently as I would like. I have a Bachelors in both English and Art History as well as a Masters in Public Administration. Margaritas are my favorite drink, otherwise, I am usually chugging down water. I come from a mixed family-- my dad's side is Chinese, Filipino, and Portuguese and my mom's side is Hispanic. I live with my partner, Joseph (he keeps me humble), and our dogs Abby and Hammie. I love to travel and I also love photography. I pretend I'm good at taking photographs but using the manual functions irritate me the more I try to use them. I believe in volunteering and helping others, and I've been involved with several non-profits-- I wish that I have more time to devote to that. Lastly, one of my dreams is to see Stevie Wonder in concert (edit: I finally got see Stevie Wonder in Vegas for 2014 Thanksgiving weekend!!! One of the best concerts and Christmas presents ever!).

I hope that you enjoy my blog and the foods and stories that I share with you! I love hearing from my readers. You can comment or send me an e-mail at tortillasandhoney@gmail.com .

Cheers!
Renee
