Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs with Avocado and Green Chile | Tortillas and Honey

I am so excited to share this recipe with you today! It's one that I've been wanting to share for awhile and it's based of one of my favorite meals at one of our local restaurants. Because it's the peak of basketball season, I thought this would be a perfect recipe to share with you because there's a little background to my favorite hot dog!

I've mentioned previously that we love our college basketball team and that we also have season tickets; we don't have a professional basketball team here, so college basketball is a huge thing in Albuquerque. One of my favorite things about going to the games is not eating at the game, but eating after the game! Going to The Cube BBQ is one of the places that we typically go after the evening games, and I almost always get their 505 Dog which is a bacon wrapped hot dog with avocado and green chile. This hot dog is so good, I've turned many of my family members into fans of it as well. It's hard for me not to go there and NOT get my favorite hot dog!

Today I'm sharing with you my version of this recipe! I made my version gluten-free, using gluten free buns. You can easily make these gluten-free, which I did here. Use gluten-free hot dog buns and make sure that your hot dogs are gluten-free. Farmland® Classic Cut Bacon is gluten free, so it's a great gluten-free and top-quality option to use in this recipe.

Farmland® Bacon is one of my favorite brands of bacon that I use. The bacon is slowly smoked over real hardwoods, and Farmland® takes great pride in their curing and smoking techniques. You can taste the difference in this bacon, and it's definitely not your average bacon! They not only offer quality bacon, but also gluten-free breakfast sausages (with a variety of flavors like maple and bacon sausage) to also start your day! Please visit Farmland® to learn more about their products and where you can purchase them in your local grocery store.

These hot dogs are perfect to share at your own viewing party for family and friends! You can serve them up in the original size or you can make them smaller sized for some hearty appetizers. To do this, just cut the hot dogs in half and serve in mini hot dog buns or you can just prepare them with the normal sized buns and then cut them in half! These are a great treat to serve and share!

This hot dog is an updated version of the classic hot dog, not only with a contemporary twist, but with also a little New Mexican flair with the addition of chopped green chile. New Mexicans wouldn't do it any other way!

Hot Dogs (preferably bun-length)
Bacon Strips
Hot Dog Buns (you can use gluten free hot dog buns)
Avocado, sliced or cubed
Green chile, fire roasted, peeled, deseeded, chopped
Other condiments, as desired

Note: Adjust the amounts to however many hot dogs you're preparing!

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil, then place a wire rack on top.

Wrap hot dogs with bacon (the ratio is one slice of bacon per hot dog), then place on the wire rack seam side down.

Bake the hot dogs in the oven 15-25 minutes, until the bacon is browned and crispy. (This time will vary depending on your oven temperature and the type of bacon that you use.)

Remove the hot dogs from the oven and let cool for a couple minutes while you prepare the buns and the toppings.

Slice the buns in half, but stopping right before the end of the bun, if your buns haven't already been pre-sliced. Add one of the hot dogs inside the bun, then top with sliced avocado and the chopped green chile.

Add other toppings or condiments, depending on your own personal preference.

For feeding a crowd, you can split cut these in half for little mini appetizers or you can buy mini-buns and cut the bacon and hot dogs in half while you're preparing!
